Of the thousands of species of flies, only a few are common pests in and around homes, cottages and buildings. Some of the more common nuisance flies are the cluster fly, housefly and barn fly which are the problem flies in Ontario.
The female fly will deposit her eggs into moist organic materials such as piles of decaying organic materials such as: leaves, grass, compost, hay or animal waste.
A female fly can lay several batches of eggs after mating. Each batch usually has over 100 eggs. All flies go through what is called a complete metamorphosis. This is the stages of their development: from egg to larva then to pupa and finally they become an adult fly. Fly development varies depending on the temperature. In some cases during summertime with the right conditions a fly will develop from an egg to adulthood in 7 days.
